Violence & Religion 3 (3-0-0-0-0)

An examination of the complex relationships obtaining between religion and various forms of violence 'including war, revolution, terrorism, genocide, crime, and martyrdom'. Topics may include: the debates over whether or to what degree religious commitment is an explanatory factor in the incidence of violence 'or in the promotion of non-violence'; a comparative survey of world religions’ teachings on violence; religious contributions to debates on the moral status of war and criminal punishment; historical case studies of apparently religiously motivated violence 'or pacifist social change'.
